The practice of handing out cigarettes to school students to reward good behaviour has been brought to an end by school inspectors.
The latest Education Review Office report into three of the four sites of the Felix Donnelly College, which caters for students in the care of Child Youth and Family, has slammed the practice of rewarding students with tobacco.
The report highlights the college’s new behaviour management regime, which it says eliminates the use of cigarettes as a reward for good behaviour.
However it goes on to say the change has caused upset for students and staff, and the new system is yet to be fully implemented.
Felix Donnelly scores poorly on other counts in the report, which says there is little evidence of good teaching practice at the schools.
ERO says long periods of time are devoted to activities of unexamined value, and the board chair has been slow in dealing with matters of concern against staff.
