The Ministry of Social Development has revealed it is working through 155 claims of abuse or maltreatment over the past 66 years.

It has set up an investigative unit separate from Child, Youth and Family to examine each case and the care system in place at the time.

The first of the civil cases is due in the High Court next month, and some claims date back to the1940s under the former Department of Social Welfare. Some are against people with long careers in social work who vigorously deny the allegations.

The number of the cases does not come as a surprise to a lobby group called PANIC, or Parents Against Negative Intervention by CYF.

At the moment, the Children’s Commissioner deals with current complaints about CYF, which amount to about 400 a year.

Chief executive Peter Hughes says the ministry will do whatever it can to put things right.

United Future MP Judy Turner says the same process should be applied to current allegations against CYF. She was due to meet government officials on Thursday to discuss the establishment of a panel to deal with current complaints against CYF.
