Police disappointed with acquittal of man on baby assault charges

Posted at 4:04pm on 31 Mar 2007

The police say they are disappointed with the acquittal of a man accused of assaulting his baby and leaving him totally blind and brain damaged.

Late on Friday a jury at the High Court in Auckland found Andrew Wepiha, 24, not guilty of wounding with the intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

The Crown alleged Mr Wepiha either shook his three month old son or threw him against a wall.

But Mr Wepiha’s defence told the jury he is an honest and caring father and the case was based on flimsy evidence.

The officer in charge, Detective Sergeant Stephen Nightingale says police are disappointed with the verdict, but there is nothing more they can do.

He says despite the verdict, he remains concerned about the welfare of the couple’s other child and has alerted the Department of Child Youth and Family.
