Name and shame CYFSWATCH Webmaster gets blogged

By COLIN MARSHALL – NZPA | Tuesday, 27 March 2007

A Masterton man hosting a website set up to “name and shame” social workers has no regrets about getting involved, despite finding his own name and address posted on the site in apparent retaliation.

Henk Van Helmond offered to host the blog site “cyfswatch” after internet giant Google pulled the plug following threats to Green MP Sue Bradford over her parliamentary bid to remove the so-called section 59 legal defence for parents to physically discipline their children.

Mr Van Helmond said he believed in what cyfswatch was trying to do, having had a 17-year battle with the Department of Child, Youth and Family (CYF) over his son being put into foster care.

The latest person to fall foul of the website is Labour MP Sue Moroney, after somebody posted an address purporting to be that of her home.

That prompted someone calling themselves “claude balls” to post Mr Van Helmond’s address in response: “Whats (sic) sauce for the goose. . .,” it said.

Mr Van Helmond had not seen the post when spoken to by NZPA but he was not surprised or concerned.

“That’s fine. I have never actually hidden from anybody. I might be the public face of cyfswatch but I’m not hiding.”

His details were readily available to the public.

“It doesn’t bother me one little bit. I didn’t know about the comment but I was expecting it sooner or later.”

He said he could not be held responsible for what people wrote.

“As the host I am not responsible for the content on the site but as a person who actually gives a damn I am concerned about the things that are posted there.

“There’s not a lot I can do about it but if people find something they know is false or misleading they can e-mail me and I’ll look into it.”

He hoped CYF would try to pursue him through the legal system as he wanted his “day in court” over his own dispute.

Mr Van Helmond has posted details on cyfswatch over how many hits the site is getting and where they are coming from.

He said as at March 24 the site had received 304,522 visits for the month and people including parliamentarians, various media and police were among the visitors.

He said he would not try to find out which individual MPs had visited.

“At the end of the day, who gives a damn?”

His posting on police visitors was similarly irreverent.

“`And are we under police investigation? A few hits from the police means we probably are, or at least, they are watching us.

“I’ll support the boys and girls in blue and wont (sic) say anymore about their visits, except, whets (sic) up guys? No more porn sites for you to visit?”

Mr Van Helmond has multiple sclerosis and has previously been prominent in Wairarapa for setting up a site to shame able-bodied people who used disabled car parks.
