Anti-smack fight heats up

Mar 26, 2007

The fight against Sue Bradford’s anti-smacking bill has been stepped up a notch.

Family First, For the Sake of our Children, the Sensible Sentencing Trust and Grey Power are placing a full page newspaper advertisement on Tuesday to encourage people to sign a petition against the bill.

The bill, which is being championed by Green Party MP Sue Bradford, would see the use of “reasonable force” repealed from the Crimes Act.

So far the petition has received more than 50,000 signatures. The aim is to hit 300,000 so the government is forced to hold a referendum.

Family First spokesman Bob McCroskie says he is concerned how much pressure the government is putting on people to force the bill through.

He says it is deplorable it is being rushed through parliament under urgency and that MPs are being forced to vote in favour of it.

He also says he has had reports of social workers who want to sign the petition but have been told they will face disciplinary action if they do.

Meanwhile, two New Zealand First MPs who support the anti-smacking bill are being warned they could find themselves out of Parliament at the next election.

Party president Dail Jones says Brian Donnelly and Doug Woollerton are out of step with the rest of the caucus and the entire party.

He says the party is not in support of the legislation and MPs who vote for it could be demoted if they ignore the will of the party.

Jones says he does not know of anyone else in New Zealand First who supports Sue Bradford’s bill.

  1. Jay said

    MPs could always join protesters.
Abstain. Or Mass veto this Bill or force such.
But one may have to smack some of their bums, to get attention from them as their heads are buried in the sand!
Or they are too busy watching videos
of police forcing sex on victims.
Did not Aunty Helen jump off the steps of the plane she came back in, scream ing to her flunkys: What Tape?!?!
Then front up to media: and said usual
    whole lot of nothing.
Must be getting lessons from same spin quack as Peter Hughes. Same old, same old. “Who let the dogs out, woof woof!”
We Did Aunty Helen. Thats Ok then,
But don’t let the voters know, they
    have no Nutts!
