Former cop wades into smacking debate

A former top police officer is under fire for wading into the smacking debate.

In a video posted on the YouTube website, former Police Commissioner John Jamieson says an anti-smacking law will cause difficulties for police.

But the bill’s author is attacking his credibility.

“Mr Jamieson has no authority to speak on behalf of police in terms of current police practices.  He hasn’t been commissioner for some 14 years, he’s been a candidate for Christian right-wing parties,” Green Party children’s affairs spokesperson Sue Bradford says.
Parliament will debate the anti-smacking bill again later in March.
