Amnesty highlights Children’s rights

Amnesty International wants the government to honour its commitments to the rights of children.

3 March 2007
On the eve of Children’s Day, Amnesty International is asking the government to honour its commitments to the rights of New Zealand children. The organisation is calling on the government to increase efforts to improve the lives of all New Zealand children.

Amnesty’s Children’s Rights Network Co-coordinator Peter Sutton says New Zealand efforts in improving the rights of children is far from adequate. Mr Sutton says one of the major problems is that children do not have votes and when it comes to a question of priorities, their needs get pushed to one side.

Mr Sutton says he wants to see more cash given to CYFs and voluntary organisations to put a stop to abuse and help poor families with children.
